If this is the first time you've heard of ladder shelves, they are simply a vertical row of shelves that look like an A-Ladder, with a few slight changes. Most of the time they come in 5 tier heights, though there are also a few brands that make them higher, the top most shelf will be the smallest and each shelf below will gradually get larger similar to a staircase formation. You will find a variety of different styles in your local home depot; the two main varieties are the 'Freestanding' and 'leaning' types. The freestanding ladder shelf has back support so that it can be placed in any space and remains standing on its own. Alternatively the leaning shelf needs to be bolted to a wall in order to stay upright. Each has its own benefits, the freestanding one can be placed anywhere in your house, but there is a risk of it falling over; the leaning shelf has the extra support of the wall so it can support much heavier weights.

Just know that you'll be paying more for an antique than you would for a newer barrister. If you want that antique look but you don't have the budget, look for a newer, distressed barrister. Antique barristers will almost definitely be constructed from solid wood, ensuring a higher level of quality. If you're buying a new barrister bookcase, make sure to find one made from solid wood if quality is the main factor in your purchase.

Solid oak should be used throughout the piece, even in the drawer bases and cabinet backs; these are the places where some manufactures might substitute veneers in an attempt to keep costs down. Quality pieces will facilitate dovetailed joints in the drawers, and when finished in a tough, hard-wearing lacquer such as a resilient satin for instance, this is a pretty tough piece of furniture sure to last generations.
