It is like taking a regular bookcase and adding a glass door to the front that slides up and into the case to allow access. They show off your attractive books while at the same time keeping the dust at bay.

There are many types of bookcases, from traditional, to cheap, to stylish to modern and they have a variety of purposes. No longer are bookcases just confined to books, you can now get styles with DVD sections or CD section where a rack goes up the middle, with wider spaced shelves on either side.

The closed doors on the barrister bookcases protect your items from dust and moisture and keep them in good shape. The shelves in most barrister bookcases do not move or adjust but some have shelves that can be pulled out so you can store items that are perfectly flat.

Bookcases that you assemble yourself can be useful as you may not be able to fit a piece that is already put together through the door, and you do not want to damage it. For this reason always ask if you can have it in a flat pack format or delivered in parts so you or some hired help can put it together.

As you probably know, available space in any environment, whether residential or commercial, is hard to come by these days. With the ever growing population, it is no surprise there is progressive less and less space we have for use. At the same time, what available space there is, it comes at a price. For families, this may mean needing to settle for a smaller home such as a 2 bedroom apartment. For businesses, an office with a smaller floor space might have to do. With such spatial restrictions, there is a need then to be more creative in using the space. Corners in any room are often difficult to utilize because of their awkward position. Hence, corner shelves become perfect to alleviate this problem.

In a typical home, there are a number of rooms in which the corners end up being underutilized to a high degree. One example is of the living room. A regular bookshelf may not end up flush against a corner of a wall. However, if you got a specialized corner bookshelf, the result will be different. Another room that could benefit from a corner shelving unit is the bathroom. If you have a small bathroom like I do, then you'll know that being cramp in it is not a good feeling at all. If I were you, I would get a floating corner shelf which would simply hang on the corner of the wall.

Make one mark at the desired height and then using the level, transfer it to the other wall. A corner shelf support can be as simple as a piece of one inch by two inch material. If the shelf is two feet wide on each wall you will need to install one twenty-four inch piece and one twenty-three inch piece (nominal) on the walls. You can router the edges with a fancy design or just round them over as you choose. Once the support pieces are in place (ledgers) you can construct the shelf itself. An inexpensive shelf can be cut from plywood with a nice front curved edge. By using a piece of three quarter inch wide or larger edge trim to finish off the cut edge, you can paint this shelf and have a great unit. If you wish to stain the shelf you will need to either edge glue and build up a wide board or obtain a twenty-four inch wide board from a saw mill.
