If this is the first time you've heard of ladder shelves, they are simply a vertical row of shelves that look like an A-Ladder, with a few slight changes. Most of the time they come in 5 tier heights, though there are also a few brands that make them higher, the top most shelf will be the smallest and each shelf below will gradually get larger similar to a staircase formation. You will find a variety of different styles in your local home depot; the two main varieties are the 'Freestanding' and 'leaning' types. The freestanding ladder shelf has back support so that it can be placed in any space and remains standing on its own. Alternatively the leaning shelf needs to be bolted to a wall in order to stay upright. Each has its own benefits, the freestanding one can be placed anywhere in your house, but there is a risk of it falling over; the leaning shelf has the extra support of the wall so it can support much heavier weights.
If you have the space, you might want to consider buying 2 identical ladders. You can buy long planks of wood for the shelves, and create a whole system. To really add flair, have the ends of the planks extend past the ladders on both ends. Have the planks cut so that the bottom plank is the longest, and then shorter and shorter. The end effect will look like a huge ladder!
So why are ladder shelves so popular with house owners all of a sudden? One reason might be to do with the affects of the recent economic downturn; people are keeping a close hold on what money they have. Instead of spending your hard earned salaries on a brand new set of shelves the other option would be to make your own. You might be thinking that it is a huge job that may take over a week to complete, but you'd be wrong, making a set of ladder shelves is very simple and will cost you a fraction of the price of buying them new.
