Bookcases that you assemble yourself can be useful as you may not be able to fit a piece that is already put together through the door, and you do not want to damage it. For this reason always ask if you can have it in a flat pack format or delivered in parts so you or some hired help can put it together.
Go for a colour that compliments the rest of your furniture. Solid wood or a wood finish is the best choice and looks more traditional. You can get some good ones made with a wood effect that are fairly cheap but look the real deal. Try and invest in real wood if you can as it is long lasting, however, you do not need to if you cannot afford it.
A wall of books can become an oversized Advent Calendar, filled with small gifts to be opened each day. Again, this is easy with a cube-type bookcase, as baskets filled with goodies can be placed in the cubes; another idea is to just wrap gifts and set them in the spaces, which is especially nice for homes with limited floor space.
Floating bookcases are esthetically appealing and will be appreciated by anyone that enters your home. They are two different kinds of floating bookcases. One is hung up on the wall above the ground giving it the appearance that is floating. The second is designed so that once the books are stacked the shelving sort of disappears making the books appear to be floating in thin air. These are good for small spaces as they are less obvious and make the room seem larger.
