Books first appeared in the world as scrolls. These scrolls were usually inscribed by hand and so their production was quite costly. Religious institutions, libraries and ancient universities prized the books highly. These necessitated the need for specialized containers or boxes which were easily accessible for easy referencing. Initially the shelved containers were much deeper and separated into many compartments for easier access. The shelving was usually hidden away in closets that blended with the home decor or in private study rooms.
Skateboard shelves can be hip with the kids of the house and help them put away their notebooks, while cases with integrated nooks for reading can give the kids an interesting place to do their homework. You can organize you books by color to create a rainbow affect, though the time it would take to do that could be outside of the realm of possibility. However, on a rainy day, instead of watching TV all afternoon, perhaps color-coding books could be the perfect project to brighten up your time inside. And while you are at it, take advantage of having empty shelves and (finally) dust and clean them.
Cube style shelving is an open style with no back to them which makes it ideal for a room divider, between the living and dining areas for example. If you prefer one where little fingers can't get into then glass doors are convenient as the items inside can still be viewed but not touched. Or for a completely practical item check out those cases that double as a TV stand, whereby the TV sits on the top and books or the DVD player, magazines or similar are stacked neatly below.
