Apart from the standard and decorative bookcases, you also find cube units, corner units, or the barrister. In fact, in terms of available finishes, you could only be limited by your imagination.
A ladder bookcase generally leans back against the wall and has a tapered design that resembles a ladder. The shelving starts out wide at the bottom then tapers out giving it a stylish appeal.
Bookcases, by name, are meant to house books of all shapes and sizes. They come in all sorts of styles, including Barrister, Cubed, Corner and Kids size. They can be black or white or patterned or wood finished. They can be open-face or covered in glass. They are often the centerpiece of a living room, and as such, can act as a central place to exhibit not just books, but their own interesting design.
Books first appeared in the world as scrolls. These scrolls were usually inscribed by hand and so their production was quite costly. Religious institutions, libraries and ancient universities prized the books highly. These necessitated the need for specialized containers or boxes which were easily accessible for easy referencing. Initially the shelved containers were much deeper and separated into many compartments for easier access. The shelving was usually hidden away in closets that blended with the home decor or in private study rooms.
