You need to consider size, space and colour as the main components as your bookcase. Always take measurements of a room if you are going furniture shopping, and try and identify a space where you can place the bookcase and know it will fit.
Cube style shelving is an open style with no back to them which makes it ideal for a room divider, between the living and dining areas for example. If you prefer one where little fingers can't get into then glass doors are convenient as the items inside can still be viewed but not touched. Or for a completely practical item check out those cases that double as a TV stand, whereby the TV sits on the top and books or the DVD player, magazines or similar are stacked neatly below.
The invention of the printing press by Johannes Gutenberg in 1440 made books more common. The need for their storage also become more pronounced. The oldest shelves in existence are believed to be in the Bodleian Library at Oxford University, they have been in place since the end of the 16th century. What surprises me though is the fact that the initial designs made then have remained till today, and are used as a standard for the design of the modern bookcases.
